6 Summer reads for teachers

Leaving behind a virtual school year is important, whilst you uninstall Zoom and switch your laptop off, the team here at Teacherly have asked the community and compiled a list of relevant must-read books over the summer!

We understand the need to take a break from being an Educator but also the desire to stay relevant and on top of things, so we compiled the perfect mix of books that won’t tell you how to teach but will be just what you need to learn something new:

Leading while black book by Floyd Cobb

1. Leading While Black is a reflection on the realities of black school leaders. The book digs deep into Floyd Cobb’s personal and professional experience in accepting the harsh realities of being an equity-minded Black leader in K-12 Schools.

Pedagogy of the obsessed book by Paulo Freire

2. Dive deep into educational philosophy with, Paulo Friere a Brazillian educator and philosopher who was a leading advocate for critical pedagogy. His best-known work if Pedagogy of the Oppressed, a foundational text of the critical pedagogy movement.

A book called The education of an american dreamer by Peter G Peterson

3. If you’re feeling a bit more entrepreneurial this summer and in need of some inspiration, Peter G. Peterson, former Secretary of Commerce and Co-Founder of the Blackstone Group, candidly explores his success, failures and tragedy. The Education of An American Dreamer remarkably depicts the responsibilities a leader should own.

4. 2020 has accurately shown us just how valuable technology is to society. Whilst you take your tech detox, dive into this book where N. Chandrasekaran, chairman of Tata Sons provides us with a radical reimagining of the future of technology and how it has the potential to solve the world’s biggest problems in Bridgital Nation.

A book called stop talking about wellbeing by Kat Howard

5. If you just can’t switch off, Stop Talking About Wellbeing by Kat Howard focuses on the problem of teachers leaving the profession at an alarming level, and teachers’ mental health becomes a fundamental concern. Wellbeing has been pushed to the top of the national agenda in a bid for schools to consider how to look after their staff. However, with this book, Kat aims to flip the narrative on wellbeing completely.

A book called release by Patrick Ness

6. An ‘epic read’ you just can’t put down, Release by Patrick Ness is a new classic focusing on a gay teenagers quest for freedom, self-acceptance and a journey about what happens when the walls we build start coming down.
